New Beginnings are what Kent Julian is all about. From youth pastor to life coach and motivational speaker, the subject of today’s Trailblazer feature has helped thousands of men and women discover their passions and given them the tools they need to pursue them.
Kent and his wife Kathy have been role models and friends for more than two decades, and I am beyond excited to feature the story of his new beginning here.
How did you know it was time to make a change?
I hit a wall with my job. Something I had thoroughly enjoyed lost all of its enjoyment. As I look to the future, I could not imagine continuing to do something I was no longer passionate about for 30+ years.
What gave you the confidence you needed to move forward?
Honestly, I didn't have much confidence. Starting my own business was such a foreign concept to me. Over time, however, I grew in confidence by hiring coaches who were already doing what I wanted to do. Bottom line, I learned from the experts and that gave me confidence.
Who/what inspires you today?
Great question! My relationship with God inspires me the most. I'm also inspired by Kathy—my wife and the love of my life—as well as by our three children. I am passionate about ongoing learning, so every year I hire coaches, attend conferences, and get involved in mastermind groups. Plus, I have daily disciplines, which include reading and exercising, that keep me inspired and energized.
What are you dreaming about now?
The speaking side of my business has exploded over the past few years. I'm now launching into a new market for me that gets me excited because of the value and service I believe I can provide.
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
I'm not sure I can limit it to just one. First, from a young age I was taught that what I believe is evidenced by how I live, not just by what I say. I try to live by these words. Second, hard work beats talent every time talent doesn't work hard. This means I have a competitive advantage because I love to work hard at something I'm passionate about. I could share more, but will stop there (smile).
What do you know now that you wish you would have known when you started?
Most big goals take two times as long and cost three times as much…or take three times as long and cost two times as much to accomplish.
What encouragement can you offer someone who wants to make a change but is apprehensive?
Big is little and little is big. You can make big changes in your life by taking little steps every day. And if you take the little steps every day, it’s practically guaranteed your big goals will be accomplished.
