Despite statistics revealing that 1 in 8 couples of reproductive age face infertility challenges, the journey often feels isolating and lonely. Every. Single. Woman I have had the opportunity to work with as she struggled to become pregnant has spoken of feeling detached - even from her closest family and friends. The drumbeat of daily doctors appointments, the constant experimentation with conventional and/or alternative therapies, and the heartbreak of learning yet another round of treatment has failed is hard to accept - and even harder to share.
This year the national infertility association Resolve has chosen as the theme for Infertility Awareness Week, "You are Not Alone." Those four words are incredibly powerful, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help spread awareness about the prevalence of the infertility experience.
Over the course of this week, I will be sharing stories from women who have navigated the turbulent waters of infertility and emerged triumphant with the help of medical intervention, alternative therapies, and/or adoption. The common thread uniting these women is the help they found by being part of a community and realizing they were not alone.
Check back this week to read their stories of encouragement and hope. And take comfort in knowing that if you are struggling, you are not alone.
